The Researchers

Dr. John Ewen

I have been interested and working with hihi since I was involved with establishing the Tiritiri Matangi island population through translocation in 1995. This involved completing an MSc degree under the supervision of my now long term collaborator and friend Doug Armstrong. Most recently I have taken a research position at the Institute of Zoology in London where I continue to develop my work interest in this species. My primary focus is testing the links between diet, parasites and health in hihi and how these factors influence productivity and fitness. I also actively contribute a scientific aspect to hihi conservation management based on reintroduction. So that makes me some mix of conservation biologist and evolutionary ecologist. My work therefore covers a broad interest in hihi biology and conservation and draws on fantastic collaborations with my colleagues and students.
