I have been monitoring the hihi population on Tiritiri Matangi Island for the past two seasons (07/08 and 08/09), working closely with John Ewen and Rose Thorogood. The monitoring programme, as part of a contract for the New Zealand Department of Conservation, is an integral part of hihi conservation and contributes valuable long-term data on the breeding biology of this species. Through my involvement with hihi monitoring I have developed an interest in the signal content of ornamental colour displays and hope to shortly start a PhD, commencing in 2009 under the supervision of John, looking at the influence of various environmental and genetic factors on plumage colouration in hihi.
