Congratulations to Caitlin Andrews on submitting her PHD!! “Foraging for a foothold”

We are very happy to share that Caitlin has submitted her PHD. This is a truly global PHD effort with a focus on hihi dietary variation. It included field study on multiple hihi populations (Tiritiri Matangi, Rotokare, Bushy Park Tarapuruhi and Zealandia) and even some sites where we hope to see hihi in the future (Tawharanui), it was based through the University of Cambridge (UK) and partnered with the Zoological Society of London and included a supervisor (Rose Thorogood) move to University of Helsinki part way through. Given the year that 2020 has been, Caitlin finished up working from home in Massachusetts, USA. Nothing like a good challenge! Caitlin has confidently moved through all this and has produced an important and fascinating piece of research. Well done from all of us in the hihi world within which Caitlin is now well and truly embedded. We will update once the results of her thesis examination is complete. For now you can enjoy a taste in this excellent short presentation highlighting one of her research chapters (from our recent Hihi Science Event)…

Written by Dr John Ewen

I have been interested and working with hihi since I was involved with establishing the Tiritiri Matangi island population through translocation in 1995. I am now employed as a Research Fellow at the Zoological Society of London and have been here since 2004. My research is multi-disciplinary and focusses on small population biology and management. I use decision science to assist in planning hihi management and drive our applied research with this species and have experience in molecular and behavioural ecology, wildlife health and nutrition and reintroduction biology.
